The digital world can be a bit frightening and hard to navigate. Even more daunting is learning how to use digital media to market a business. Luckily the online world doesn’t have to be a difficult platform to navigate. Once you have some basic skills under your belt, it can actually be a very easy and beneficial platform. Especially for business owners to grow their reach and eventually sales. To get started it is important to look into some very common and simple dos that will benefit your business and some don’ts that should be avoided.

Do get to know your customers

It is incredibly important to understand the wants and needs of your customers. To do this it is important to listen to feedback and be constantly working to improve. The goals is to get into the mind of your customers and try to think like they do. This will give you the ability to answer your own questions such as: what is working and what isn't, what kind of products and services should I be providing, what kind of content do I like to see on social media, what type of advertising is most likely to attract me?

Don't ignore negative feedback

Criticism is hard for all of us to process, but try not to think of it as a negative thing. As a brand the goal should always be to continue to improve and grow. In order to do this it is important to identify things that aren't working or could be better. Therefore it is important to take in negative customer reviews and try to really think "how can I fix this problem." Negative feedback is not meant to be hurtful and can actually be more beneficial than all positive feedback. Simply hearing that your products and services are great doesn't help you identify ways to continue to improve and grow. The negative comments are the ones that can help you identify key points that need attention.

Do create a blog

A blog can give you a platform to communicate events and new things happening within your business. Yes, this can be done on social media but a blog allows you to create longer content that provides more information. These posts can then be later shared to social media, where consumers can then click the link to read further descriptions. Additionally, a blog is also a platform of your own. That means you can design your blog to look however you want and contain the content you wish to share.

Don't sacrifice quality for quantity

"Quality over quantity" is a phrase we have all heard growing up and this applies to your blog and social media posts as well. Creating and publishing more posts is not of value to your consumers. Consumers are looking for high quality posts that provide useful content that is clearly prepared and provides important information. Low quality content that is clearly quickly pushed out and that doesn't provide a lot of useful information could actually deter customers. It is important to be consistent with your posting, but don't feel pressured to push out content that is not of good quality.

Do make sure your website provides optimal user experience

It is important for your website to be both visually appealing and user friendly. Your website is a great tool to promote the goals for your brand, what you have to offer, and is a great purchasing platform. You should work to improve the ease of use for your company website to ensure your consumers can perform all of these basic functions. It is also important to ensure that all of these features translate onto mobile devices. More consumers are now using mobile devices to browse websites, so it is important that your website is also user friendly for mobile.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

There is never anything shameful in reaching out for help. You may be an expert in your given field and that is how you've created a successful product/service for your company, but you can't be an expert in everything. Since you cannot always be the expert, it is important to take advantage of other experts. Online research can provide you with a good understanding of how to navigate digital marketing, but you may still have lingering questions or skill requirements you don't possess. There are many experts out there in digital marketing and reaching out to them could really help you improve and grow your business.
